Old Fort Harrod State Park will hold its 6th Annual Old Fort Harrod Settlement & Raid on June 21 and 22, 2014 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with the Raid at 2:00 pm daily.
This is the Park's signature event for 2014 and promises to be bigger and better than ever. This year's Settlement and Raid will feature Don Shaver and a Native Village sponsored by Friends of Fort Harrod. Check out the slideshows of the 2013 Settlement & Raid below.
Many re-enactors and volunteers work hard to re-create the actual look and feel of a real Shawnee attack upon Fort Harrod which occurred in March 1777. It would begin a year long seige on the Fort during which many settlers would die violent deaths. The Shawnee would kill or steal all of the settlers livestock and burn their crops. The year of 1777 became known as the "Year of Despair" and one can only imagine the terror and hardships the settlers in the Fort had to endure. But, the Fort held, attack after attack. Had it not, there would have been no Harrods Town, no Harrodsburg and no State of Kentucky!
Boonesborough fell, Logans Station fell, but Fort Harrod was never overrun. At one point they nearly ran out of gun powder which gave rise to the famous "Powder Run" by George Rogers Clark, James Harrod and others to obtain the much needed powder. They were successful and the Fort was saved.
Set up and the encampment begin on Friday, June 20, 2014. Friends of Fort Harrod will once again host concessions for the two day event. Come join the fun!
